Linear Inequalities: Before attempting to sketch the region described by the inequalities, we should consider the straight line each inequality relates to and whether we should be above or below or to the left or right of this line. This type of question is also good practice for recognising and sketching straight line graphs. A Level maths students taking the Decision Maths module will use this technique again when they cover Linear Programming.
Calculating Means: At first, many students aren’t sure what to do here and some incorrectly guess that they should find the mean of the two means given in the question. However, as we are asked for the mean of the whole group, we should calculate the total mark for the whole group (boys and girls) and also the total number of students in the group (boys and girls). Then we can calculate the correct mean mark by dividing the total of all the marks by the total number of students in the group.
Histograms: With a Bar Chart, the TALLEST bar represents the most popular item or category whereas, with a Histogram, it is the bar with the largest AREA. In this question, we were told that there were 16 patients who spent between 10 and 15 minutes at the surgery and this was enough information to relate the area of each bar to the number of patients and to work out the vertical scale (Frequency Density). The final part of the question required us to determine the percentage of patients who spent between 25 and 40 minutes at the surgery.
